Hello Internet
Hello.

My name is Amanda. I live in Tallahassee, Florida in the United States.

Sometimes I draw things. Sometimes I post things that are not as funny as I thought they were. Mostly I just reblog Carl Sagan related gibberish. Also, banjos are cool.

Prepare for randomness and geekery.

"The capacity to be alone is the capacity to love. It may look paradoxical to you, but it is not. It is an existential truth: only those people who are capable of being alone are capable of love, of sharing, of going into the deepest core of the other person - without possessing the other, without becoming dependent on the other, without reducing the other to a thing, and without becoming addicted to the other. They allow the other absolute freedom, because they know that if the other leaves, they will be as happy as they are now. Their happiness cannot be taken by the other, because it is not given by the other."

"

” The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation.

” For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And along the way, lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.”

"The idea is that we put ourselves on autopilot when we are very young because reality is so shitty that we would rather be in a trance than deal with it. Putting yourself on autopilot is a way to avoid dealing with the vampire and when you are on autopilot you become a vampire slave or a Renfield: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renfield
The moment you start pulling yourself out of the trance and decide that you want to turn your life into something amazing you will almost always have to start by destroying, transforming, or escaping from a vampire.
The vampire may be a person a situation or a parasitic thought pattern. But whatever it is it will always be blocking your evolution by making you feel as though you can never be autonomous. The vampire is the creature in your life that rolls it’s eyes at you when you express love, creativity, or a goal that involves personal growth.
This is a theory that I am developing right now, and would love to hear other perspectives on it."

"There is a spiritual obligation, there is a task to be done. It is not, however, something as simple as following a set of somebody else’s rules. The noetic enterprise is a primary obligation toward being. Our salvation is linked to it. Not everyone has to read alchemical texts or study superconducting biomolecules to make the transition. Most people make it naively by thinking clearly about the present at hand, but we intellectuals are trapped in a world of too much information. Innocence is gone for us. We cannot expect to cross the rainbow bridge through a good act of contrition; that will not be sufficient.
We have to understand. Whitehead said, “Understanding is the apperception of pattern as such”; to fear death is to misunderstand life. Cognitive activity is the defining act of humanness. Language, thought, analysis, art, dance, poetry, mythmaking: these are the things that point the way toward the realm of the eschaton. We humans may be released into a realm of pure self-engineering. The imagination is everything. This was Blake’s perception. This is where we came from. This is where we are going. And it is only to be approached through cognitive activity."

"No, I don’t think you’re gonna be single forever, and also I don’t understand your obsession with romantic love. There are other ways to have fulfilling relationships that can sustain you and make your life great and fun, other than having a sexualized relationship. It’s not the only kind of fulfilling human interaction. So, even if you are single forever that doesn’t mean that you’ve had some kind of failed life."

Today I got a tattoo as a homage to the space shuttle fleet. So sad that the program has come to end but I can see a very bright future for NASA and space travel. Here it is next to my year old Carl Sagan quote which the tattoo artist was nice enough to fill in for free. :)
