"To be able to get good at something, you actually have to have the drive to get better at something. So that implies that you know that you suck. So to get better at something, you already have to be charged with self-loathing; it’s the nature of the beast…And anybody that gets good at stuff—I mean there’s a whole fucking world of people that are really good at stuff—all of them have hatred for what they’ve done; they have to. And if they can somehow pretend that they don’t have hatred for it, that they love everything they’ve done, then they’re unicorns. They’re like magic people that get good at stuff without ever hating what they’ve done. But I attest that anybody—if you go into the world and find somebody really good at something, you’re looking at a man or woman that hates themselves…But has a tremendous ego and actually thinks they can get better, which is weird, somewhere between hating yourself and loving yourself. It evens out until you’re just a regular person in the end."
